The electorate is based on the town of Rangiora and the surrounding rural area, and is north of Christchurch in North Canterbury.
The electorate existed from 1963 to 1996, but with MMP was absorbed into the new Waimakariri electorate in 1996.
The electorate is semi-rural and has been represented by the National Party except for 1972 to 1975. Derek Quigley was a National MP, but was opposed to the interventionist policies of the Muldoon Government. He resigned from Cabinet and in 1984 from Parliament.
